We used our first batch of goat’s milk to make some farmer’s cheese. This turned out great and was really easy to make. It felt really good to raise a kid from a week old, breed her and then have milk the following year. Also added in some fresh garlic from the garden and some home made pear butter.

chewbacabra chought on tape

go on…

Day 5 of 5

I’ve decided to try and take a river trip to the ocean. The nearest river without a dam, that flows freely to the Atlantic, is the Oconee. It flows south from Milledgeville, Georgia and joins the Atlamaha River. The entire distance is around 300 miles or maybe a bit less. I am doing this trip in three stages starting with the first 100 miles this year. I am posting the video of the first 100 miles and 5 days of this trip. This is day 5 of 5. I also kept a journal and will post the Journal entry for each day below the video.

Day 5 - Tuesday - September 18, 2012

In - 7:08 AM

Out - 9:20 PM

Miles - 7.5

Quick run to the Turkey Creek ramp. Local man informed me of a closer ramp but that would have been under 100 miles total for the trip. I really wanted 100 miles. He said there was another one further down at Turkey Creek and here I am. Rained all night last night but just sprinkled in the AM so I busted camp and put in.

Saw a dead beaver and a toillette seat today.

Will have to sit down and write up some reviews on gear. I took too much sutff this time. Some gear wasn’t up to snuff but some was great. This MSR Hubba solo tent is great. Easy to pitch and bust down. You can also just use the fly for a rain shelter as I am doing now while I wait for Priscilla to come pick me up. Great piece of kit.

Section 1 complete. 100 miles in the books.

Day 4 - Monday - September 17, 2012

In - 7:08 AM

Out - 5:00 PM

Miles - 30.6

I Knew I would have to push today. Camped to far North of Dublin to do my regular 20. That would put me right in town. Good news, way fewer bugs so my handwriting may be better.

Saw dead gators, pig and beaver today. Lots of trash in the town of Dublin and some awful spew of pollution just before the I-16 bridge. Saw a large big gator just after dawn and probably 100 smaller ones. Also saw more turkeys. The river has really changed. It’s like going from ecosystem to ecosystem as you go south.

Found a store in Dublin up from the bridge and bought beer and cigs. Party @ camp tonight! Huge gator slide at the camp sight. Going to do mac-n-cheese again w/samon for dinner if I work up the energy.

I miss everyone but probably Prissy the most of all. I think she has bought more goats. LOL!

Out - 3:00 PM

Miles - 22.5

This was the day of the turkey. I pushed off early to avoid all of the bugs. So after oatmeal and coffee i was gone. No cigs today either.

Saw three separate flocks of turkey, 2 deer together, more fish and turtles. Saw a bat early this morning also. Still have yet to see a snake.

I have a big push tomorrow. I think I am within 15 miles of Dublin, GA. I will ahve to row hard to get all the way through and then find a place to camp on the other side. Beef stew with tuna tonite. DAMN these bugs!!!!

This is day 2 of 5. I also kept a journal and will post the Journal entry for each day below the video.

Day 2 - Saturday - September 15, 2012

In - 9:00 AM

Out - 4:30 PM

Miles - 20.1

The word of the day is “sore.” My shoulders ache. My hands are blistered and I am sunburned. I applied 110 sunblock at least 4 times throughout the day and I am still roasted.

Slept deeply last night. The MSR Hubba tent is cumfy. Should have bought the Neoair mattress I was looking at before the trip… live and learn, I guess. I had oatmeal and coffee and pushed away from shore @ 9AM.

It’s a very warm day with few clouds and the wind isn’t as strong today. I saw a group of deer, another large hog and a dead 4’ alligator. I didn’t think I would be seeing any this soon. There are still a lot of fish seen from the boat.

Passed by a boat ramp and there were fathers and sons fishing there. The kids had many questions. I answered them all by starting with “as your real father,” and ending with “or else.”

I finished 20.1 miles by the GPS (more than that because the batteries were dead for an unknown period of time.) I made camp @ 4:30PM. Quickly getting everything done because the bugs at this camp are awful. Biting flies are driving me crazy. Mac-n-cheese for dinner. I drank the rest of the whiskey and smoked the last cig and passed right out.

This is day 1 of 5. I also kept a journal and will post the Journal entry for each day below the video.

Day 1 - Friday - September 14, 2012

In - 10:30 AM

Out - 4:30 PM

Miles - 20.5

Warm day with broken clouds. The river is much clearer than I expected. I’m used to the Alcovy River’s silty run to Lake Jackson. Had a fairly constant head wind in my face the whole day. I hope that changes for day 2.

I saw more wildlife this close to Milledgeville than I expected. I saw 2 young deer at different spots. One, with it’s spots still visible, couldn’t understand what was floating downriver. It even game me a stomp. I saw heron and cranes. I saw a set of juvenile piglets, and when I sounded them, I was immediately challenged by their unseen parents. I saw a lot of fish and lots of large gar. I will have to search through some photos to see exactly what they where.

Made camp on a large 400’ x 100’ sand bar. Dinner of cheesy tomato pasta. Drank all of my beer and a bit of Whiskey. I passed out with the sounds of coyote yipping in the woods.

Guinea Fowl dancing to a ring tone

Guinea Fowl dancing to a ring tone

even more guinea fowl chicks

even more guinea fowl chicks
